Pinnacle Point Golf Course

Pinnacle Point Golf Course

The Pinnacle Point Golf Course is something truly unique for the discerning golfer. This 18 hole championship golf course was designed by well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich who opened the course together with top Irish Tour Golf Professional Darren Clarke in November 2006.

Darren Clarke, who was also involved with many aspects of the Pinnacle Point course design, has said that Pinnacle Point is “… the best golf course on the planet.” Pinnacle Point was selected as one of the Top Ten New Golf Courses of the World by the American publication Travel & Leisure in January 2007.

This Clifftop Fynbos Golf Course inspires the golfer to play this challenging layout with a level of respect due to its dramatic views and breathtaking terrain. The 72 par layout is characterised by 7 majestic holes that line the Indian Ocean rock cliffs, four of which are played over ocean and cliff. All 18 holes have been designed to fit the contours of the land.

The reintroduction of the endemic fauna and flora to the estate has been hailed as a remarkable achievement by local and international ecologists and the preservation of this pristine Fynbos is an ongoing commitment by the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort.

Pinnacle Point has received the ultimate accolade and is recognised for its outstanding service standards, having been awarded the Compleat Golfer 5-star Experience Award. Assessment is based on various categories, including clubhouse facilities, golf course, halfway house, practice facilities, customer service quality, price/value relationship, services offered and ambiance. Recognising performance excellence in the golfing world and seen as the ‘Oscars’ of the golfing industry, the Compleat Golfer 5-Star Experience Awards, celebrates the top 25 South African clubs that represent the country’s finest golfing experiences. The Pinnacle Point golf course, which is open to the public, has gone from strength to strength and is now rated as one of the top courses in the world.

Mossel Bay Golf Course

Mossel Bay Golf Course

Famed for having a view of the Indian Ocean from every tee, this 18-hole links-style course, with its large undulating greens, makes for an idyllic yet challenging round of golf. The golf club was founded in 1905 and the golf course relocated to its present position in 1924. A round of golf at Mossel Bay Golf Club is the perfect start to a golfing trip along the coastal areas of the Garden Route.

On Course
The course is an easy walk and very playable from tee to green for all golfers, even if you have just taken up the game. The beautiful views of the Indian Ocean or the Springbuck roaming on the course might distract you, but they will most definitely leave you with lasting memories. The Mossel Bay golf course signature hole is the 17th hole, which is a par 5. At 494m and stroke 2, this can be challenging especially when playing into the sea breeze. The tee is situated high above the fairway with magnificent vistas over the estate, and the hole runs downhill towards the green with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop. Well-placed bunkers on the side of the fairway will catch any errand tee shots.

The green is a large, three level, undulating green, which makes a par 5 on the hole uncertain, should you find the green with your approach shot.

Mossel Bay is an 18-hole, par 72, links-style golf course with a 71 rating.

Knysna Golf Course

Knysna Golf Course

Nestled on the shores of the Knysna Lagoon on the Garden Route and close to the Heads, the Knysna Golf Club’s 18-hole course meanders through tidal pools and between magnificent indigenous trees.

A testing links/parkland layout which has been enhanced over the past ten years, it has some of the best greens in the Southern Cape. Although flat and easy to walk, the course still provides players of all levels with a good challenge and is an affordable golfing experience not to be missed while touring the area.

The course originally had bayview greens and very few bunkers until, in 1994, an extensive upgrade program was launched and 18 new bent greens were built. Today we enjoy greens which are highly receptive, with a constantly smooth putting surface all year round.

Over the years, new tidal pools and channels have been introduced and real attention paid to the bunkering throughout the layout.

Although the course is flat, the many tidal water hazards, raised undulating greens, strategic bunkering and the fact that the course is at sea level makes the course play much longer than the 5,820 metres on the card.

The course record stands at 64 – only achieved in 2012 by our then resident professional Chris Dixon.

It is a par 72 with a South African Golf Union rating of 70 having 4 par 5s, 4 par 3s and 10 par 4s. Water hazards are in play on 12 holes. The signature hole is the par 3 8th with it’s island green and at 152 metres is usually played with a cross wind.

Stroke index 1 on the card is the par 4 6th at 371 metres with lateral water hazards along both sides of the fairway and a large green that can accommodate many different pin placements.

Simola Golf Course

Simola Golf Course

Keeping your head down at Simola can be a challenge; simply because the views around the course are awe-enspiring, and with this, it is clear to see why Simola takes its place as one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations. It’s also the first Jack Nicklaus Signature course on the Garden Route, reflecting the maestro’s philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land.

The course offers challenging and rewarding golf amidst spectacular scenery. Set below the high ridges, it’s free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. Fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par 5’s and five par 3’s adds a new dimension to the game. It’s par for the course that every hole boasts exceptional views; either out across the Knysna Lagoon all the way to the Heads or over the picturesque Knysna River as it twists and turns through the valley below.

The magnificence of the site inspired golfing legend Jack Nicklaus to design a masterpiece amidst the rolling hills of the Simola Estate.

Lauded as the greatest golfer in the history of the game, the Golden Bear is also acknowledged as one of the world’s leading golf course designers with more than 200 courses around the globe bearing his famous signature.

Now, the Simola Golf Club proudly joins the ranks of this elite group of internationally recognised courses.

Oudtshoorn being the closest town to the famous Congo Caves is a very popular tourist attraction and the course proves an excellent diversion for the keen golfer.

The Oudtshoorn Golf Club was established to the west of the town in 1922 and then relocated to its present position in 1957. It`s a well-established 18-hole layout that is surprisingly lush and in great condition.
